LARGE DIPTYCH, TRIPTYCH AND POLYPTYCH WORKS

Paul Martin frequently spoke about the importance of rhythm and movement in his work and these multi-panelled pieces allowed him freedom to explore what that meant. In some of them, one can read a progressive, or narrative, movement across the panels; in others, there is an echoing or mirroring process between them, though a better comparison might be with antiphonal or call-and-response styles of music.

The other most striking aspect of these pieces is their sheer size, and what that means. Martin had an innate understanding that a large painting was not merely a small painting blown up, but that scale was an important compositional element in its own right.
